The Course Description Booklet is for students and parents. Contents of the booklet will address the following concerns:- Graduation requirements for NFHS

- Course descriptions
Students should seek assistance from their parents and guidance counselor as they review the information and select courses to reach their goals. Students should also feel free to discuss any concerns with their present teachers or possible future teachers.
Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2023 and Beyond
1. The Class of 2023 and beyond must earn 21 credits for graduation as well as follow the prescribed credits listed below:- 4 credits of English
- 4 credits of Mathematics (must include Algebra II or equivalent)
- 3 credits of Social Studies (must include World Studies, U. S. Studies, and Government)
- 3 credits of Science (must include Physical Science and Biology)
- 1/2 credit of Health
- 1/2 credit of Physical Education
- 5 credits of Electives
- 1 credit of Fine Art
2. Students must earn a cumulative passing score of 18 points using 7 end-of-course state tests. To ensure students are well rounded, they must earn a minimum of 4 points in Math, 4 points in English, and 6 points across Science and Social Studies.
3. Students must have earned the necessary credits (21) and passed the Ohio State Tests by rehearsal time for graduation in order to participate in the Graduation Ceremony.
Scheduling Requirements, Suggestions, and Class Rank
- Ninth grade students should have a four-year course of study plan. Any deviation from the plan might cause schedule conflicts at a later date.
- Students will be permitted a maximum of two (2) study halls per day.
- Students planning to ADD a course should make arrangements with the guidance department no later than the first two weeks of each semester.
- Student wishing to DROP a course should do so prior to the end of the fourth (4th) week of the first nine weeks of the course. Unless there are extenuating circumstances (example, medical reasons), students who drop a course after the fourth week of class will receive a W (withdrawn), F (Fail) grade.
- Request for change(s) of a schedule must be in writing from the parent. Changes may be honored only if the class desired is available during the same period.
- Students earning an HONORS DIPLOMA will be ranked ahead of other students receiving a regular diploma.
Requirements for Honors Diploma
Depending on whether a student is attending Newton Falls High School or attending the TCTC, honors diploma requirements differ slightly. The student must meet the requirements for the regular diploma plus criteria for honors listed below.Newton Falls High School Honors Diploma Criteria - Must complete 7 out of 8:
- 4 units of English
- 4 units of Mathematics that shall include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and another higher level course
- 4 units of Science including 2 units of advanced science
- 4 units of Social Studies
- Either 3 units of 1 foreign language or 2 units each of 2 foreign languages
- 1 unit of Fine Arts
- Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4 point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year
- Obtain a composite score of 27 on the American College Testing (ACT) tests or an equivalent composite score of 1210 on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT).
TCTC Honors Diploma Criteria - Must complete 7 out of 8:
- 4 units of English
- 3 units of Mathematics which will include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and another higher level course
- 4 units of Science including 2 units of Advanced Science
- 4 units of Social Studies
- 4 units of Career - Technical program
- Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 point scale up to the last grading period of the senior year
- Achieve proficiency benchmark established for appropriate Ohio Career - Technical Competency Assessment or equivalent
- Obtain a composite score of 27 on the American College Testing (ACT) tests or an equivalent composite score of 1210 on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) with no regard for its new writing portion. (This maintains the two scores) comparability as qualifying criteria).
NCAA Athletic Eligibility
If you want to compete in NCAA sports, you need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Plan to register before starting your freshman year of High School (or year nine of secondary school).To register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, go to this link.
